On the Olympics Opening Ceremonies

The latest Olympiad has officially begun! The opening ceremonies felt authentically Brazilian, and as Sarah Larson outlined in her review (English) of the telecast U.S. viewers saw, it included the entire unvarnished spectrum of Brazilian history and culture.

To me, it felt like watching a big family reunion where no one felt compelled to airbrush the final photo or crop out the less than glamorous members. Everyone was included (Portuguese). The young, old, vibrant, and stateless were allowed on stage. In the moment, no one seemed ashamed of the low budget production or the complex Brazilian history presented. They took a moment to forget the frustration and disappointments (English) involved in the preparations and enjoy the pageantry (Photos).

Cheers to what is sure to be a great Olympics!
